Tidy homes

One of my goals today was to spend some time cleaning house. Not only is it pretty disgusting right now since I have been so busy this week, but we are also hosting play group on Wednesday and I would be thoroughly embarrassed for people to witness my house the way it is right now (bff's excluded in previous statement). Of course, on the day I truly need to be able to spend time working on the house, Isabel takes one 30 minute nap the entire day!!

But I suppose that is ok. I'm sure you have heard the quote that says something along the lines of "A spotless home is the sign of a misspent life.". Well, obviously no misspent lives over here... At least for that reason.

This statement holds a lot of truth, though maybe I find it to be a bit over general. Isabel is now 7 3/4 months old, and the time has flown by incredibly fast - light speed. On the days when I have nothing to do other than clean, and she needs my attention, should I not revel in that? There will be a day that comes far too quickly when she thinks she doesn't need me anymore, so for now, I will enjoy the fact that she would much rather me be down on the floor playing with her than sweeping and mopping. And to be honest, I would much rather be playing too, though it is sometimes hard to forget about those responsibilities when you can not sit on the couch because of two weeks worth of unfolded laundry.

There is another quote along these same lines that I have always found very endearing. I says something like "Quiet down cobwebs, dust go to sleep. I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep." I thought of this earlier when Isabel fell asleep on my shoulder. This is a rare occurrence these days, and it was very hard for me to put her in bed after only a few minutes of cuddling.

So, cleaning will wait for tomorrow, and today, I will play.

Yo Gabba Gabba!

I have given myself the challenge of blogging everyday. Not only to make a record of our life, but also I think it is a good avenue for self reflection and discovery. That, however, is WAY too deep of an introduction to the topic of the blog today...

Yo Gabba Gabba!

Have you seen this show? I would venture to say that it is the best show for tiny tots currently on the air. Isabel loves it, and I am oddly drawn to it.

The basic premise of the show is DJ Lance Rock has 5 toys that magically come to life and teach little ones all sorts of great things (shapes, colors, sharing, manners, taking turns, etc etc) through song, dance, crazy cartoons and other bits. There is Mooney, Foofa, Brobee, Toodee, and Plex, along with many many dancing children, various bands and various famous people (we are watching the 1st season and so far we have seen Elijah Wood and Nacho Libre's side kick).

Now, let me take a moment to say that I do not let Isabel watch tv lightly... I do not use tv as a babysitter or think that tv replaces my responsibility to teach her. However, as every mom knows, there gets to be a point that if there is not a distraction, both mommy and baby will completely lose it, haha. And that is when we pull out the iPad and watch half an episode or so. And Isabel is completely entranced by this show. When DJ Lance comes on the screen, she gets a huge smile on her faced. It is hilarious.

I'm thinking Drew and Isabel need to be DJ Lance and Foofa for Halloween. Haha. Oh man, I am laughing just thinking about that picture. Someone on Etsy made it for her husband and daughter. I love it. Do you think Drew would go for it?? Yeah, I don't think so either.

Or maybe we need to have a Yo Gabba Gabba birthday party and make this cake.

I know, I am getting carried away. But honestly this show is great. I have been singing "snacky snack snack. Snack. Snack." for days now, haha. Maybe mommy likes it more than Isabel, but she does really love it. Don't judge us :)

AP Studio Art Summer Workshop

I have been fortunate enough this week to attend the Studio Art AP Summer Institute at UTA. To be perfectly honest with you, I expected to sit in a chair all week and watch power point slides about how to teach AP art, but thankfully, I was very off. From the first day, our instructor, Patricia Winnard, challenged us with new projects to create and artistic problems to solve. We had to think outside the box and step outside our comfort zone to create 4 pieces that could be used in the breadth category of an AP portfolio in 2 days. She started by having us prepare backgrounds in unusual ways. Our first background started as a round robin collaborative piece. I was extremely lucky with my table mates, all of whom I consider to be friends after this week. In a table of 4, we each had our own drawing utensil and had about a minute to work on each piece on the table. The second prepared background we did was a "dancing pencil" inspired by rhythm of music - without looking, respond to the beat of music - pencil (or other medium) never leaving the paper. We were also given a still life to work on and a "Me in a Box" assignment which I will explain shortly.

Here are some photos of my completed work this week. One thing that I learned about myself is that I am extremely hard on myself about my artwork, and was pleasantly surprised by the feedback I received from my classmates. To me, these are thrown together pieces of art, but someone very sweetly told me I could build a portfolio around these pieces. And she was sincere, too! I loved the fact that the classroom environment was incredibly friendly, where we could give each other productive criticism respectfully and not just have to say "I like it" to avoid hurting someone's feelings. I got some great advice about my pieces which pushed them way further than they would have been had I been creating in a room by myself.

Here is a photo of my work on the wall during a peer critique. I loved having someone look at my work who could actually use artistic vocabulary with me and tell me that I needed a broader range in my background to foreground, that my line quality was good, and were I should increase my value. I haven't had an opportunity like this since college and I think I really needed it.

This piece started out as the collaborative prepared background. I was not married to what was on my paper, but one of the challenges our instructor set forth was that we were not allowed to throw anything away. We had to use it in some way. This is a brilliant teaching tool that I sincerely plan to employee with my advanced art kids. So the collaborative drawings ended up with a white wash, then paint swatches, then a tessellation, and then the architectural piece. This is definitely not my favorite piece, but I was surprised at the positive feedback I received. I can definitely say this would not have come about had the no throw away policy not been in effect.

This piece started out as my dancing pencil. If you look closely, you can see a dark swirly type line in the too left corner... This is the result of "Witchy Woman," I believe, haha. Like the last piece, this one was unsatisfactory in my scope of vision, so it received a wash of latex paint. Next, I attempted a photo transfer using Xerox copies and acetone, which ate through the latex, creating this great mottled effect in the paint. Obviously the photo transfer was unsuccessful. I had these great spots where the acetone had eaten through the paint, and I wanted to highlight them, so I painted the frame as an easy way to create a focal point. I spent quite a bit of time drawing inside the frame, but was ultimately unhappy with the lack of value and emphasis the drawing had. With about 30 minutes to finish this piece on the last day, I found some great classified ads in a Popular Science magazine from the 70's which inspired the inside of the frame and the Microscope.

This piece was one of my favorites to create. You know how much I love my Kitchen Aid mixer!! For this one, we started out with a collage on paper. I was intrigued by all the images I was finding of strong women, so I stuck with that theme. The next steps came from our instructor, who had us white wash over the collage and draw from a still life on top. In an experiment on depth of field, I added the irons in the middle ground, inspired by a social commentary piece I have seen with burnt iron markings. The next step was also from our instructor, to use scrubbers and sand paper to rub away the white wash to reveal some of the collage underneath.

And finally, my Me in the Box assignment. We were supposed to get adjectives from our classmates that described how they saw us. My adjectives were sunny, serene, and soft/cuddly. Can you believe those? Haha. I am glad i come across that way, but I was surprised. Those adjectives would inspire the outside of the box. Then for the inside, we had to give ourselves adjectives that we felt described us. Mine were unpolished, natural, and bold. I love this project and will definitely do this with my students this year.

This was a great experience and has ultimately given me a renewed sense if inspiration for teaching. I am full of new ideas for the classroom and look forward to this workshop next year.

Girl Talk

This has been an interesting week. I have been at a conference at UTA for AP Studio Art. I am totally loving it. I honestly can not remember the last time I created fine art... It has been so great to be in a room with such talented people who appreciate my abilities and can offer constructive criticism and complements. It has been such an uplifting artistic experience and I feel renewed and energized about sharing these ideas with my new students. Perhaps tomorrow I will share photos I have taken during the conference. I have so many new ideas and new friends... It has truly been worth my time, which is not something I say lightly.

On the flip side, after spending so much time with Isabel lately, being away from her from 7 in the morning (before she's awake) to about 5:30 in the evening has been kind of weird, I feel like she has grown so much this week!

She has gotten to spend her days with Nana, which she absolutely loves. Nana got a rare day off today and was able to spend time with her AND make her a new dress!

Here's a video of my big girl babbling away in her new dress from Nana. Dont you think my mom should sell these on easy?

Long, Hot Summer

I can not believe that it is nearly July already. I once heard an analogy of time being like sand. When you hold it loosely in your hand, it stays forever, but the second you start to tighten your grasp, it slips through your fingers. Which is, I suppose why I try to always challenge myself to find the good in every day... to be content in my circumstances and to cherish every moment I get to spend with my amazing Drew and my sweet Isabel.

Speaking of Drew, have I told you lately what a lucky girl I am? How did I end up finding someone who would put up with my messy, scatterbrained self and not get upset when I drop my iPhone in Lake Texhoma (true story), spill stain on the deck, leave a pile of laundry on the couch for a week, kill every plant I put my hands on but still insist on buying more every year, forget groceries in the trunk, forget my phone nearly every time I leave the house, forget everything (seriously), and all the other crazy things I do? And he makes me laugh. He's Isabel's favorite person, too, with good reason. She LOVES to play with Daddy and have him tickle her and play peek-a-boo. And he's pretty cute, too ;)

As my grandmother would say, Isabel is growing like a weed. She is 7 1/2 months now (remember our discussion earlier about time flying?), and doing so many new things every day. Her new little teeth are incredibly endearing, and she has started to babble, which is insanely cute. She gets so much attention when we are out running errands... Drew and I think we should probably receive a cute baby discount at the stores we frequent. She can now roll over (which I think she is on a mission to perfect... To the point of rolling off the bed once already! Huge bruise to prove it.), and sit up on her own. She loves to shake shake shake anything that makes a noise, though one of her favorite toys lately has been a plastic bowl, haha. We have a membership a pool in the area and she absolutely loves to swim. I know I am biased, but isn't she a pretty baby?

Don't those eyes just make you melt?

On top of all the above mentioned goodness, my little genius knows how to drink from a straw. Watch your Dr Pepper people... She wants it! (note to judgmental moms: she is NOT drinking DP, it is water. What kind of mother do you think I am!?)

I am not sure why I am always surprised that life is a crazy mess, but once again I find myself shocked at how up in the air everything is these days. I am going to sign my contract this week at Dallas Lutheran and will be teaching art part time and hopefully supplementing my income with works of art that I actually produce, go figure, haha. I am in a conference this week, and I am loving the time to sit at a table and create. I need to start writing down all the genius ideas I have been having this week. If they work, my mom and I will be famous in a couple of months. I'll keep you posted.

Cha Cha Cha Changes...

You know the old saying "It's always darkest before the dawn"?  And you know how your kitchen always seems to be the messiest while you are in the process of cleaning?  I think those are both excellent analogies to describe my life right now.  Life is in a bit of an upheaval, though I think this is truly for the best.  But anyone who knows me well knows how much I like to have a plan - to know where I'm going at what time and where I will stop along the way.  God is doing a great work in my life to help me to let go and not stress quite so much about my future and finances and really just trust that He will provide like he always does.  Though change is sometimes scary, shiney new things are always fun, and so that is what I am focusing on now.

I have begun the task of job hunting for the first time since I graduated college.  I have decided to leave my cozy little home at First Baptist Academy in search for something that fits a little better.  God has been trying to tell me, not so subtly, for several months now that it's time to move on, and recently he helped me make that decision by closing the door so that I wouldn't keep standing in the doorway, teetering on the edge of that decision.  I am not going to deny that I had my pride hurt a little at the way the decision was made, but I also can not deny the weight off my shoulders and the freedom I feel having let it go.  I've lost a bit of sleep this week trying to figure out where I am supposed to go next, but I know it will be something great.  Hopefully even something that lets me spend more time with Isabel and play a bigger role in her life.  I LOVE that she gets to spend time with my mom every day, but it does bother me a little that my mom gets to feed her more than I do, change more diapers than I do, and generally spend more time in a day than I do.  I know there has got to be a happy medium here somewhere, where I can work to help provide for my family and still get to play and learn and grow with my daughter.

Speaking of Isabel.  Oh my goodness how she is growing!  This is a photo of her nearly a month ago and I can not believe how much she learns and changes every day.  These are the best kinds of changes though... she now laughs and smiles all the time.  She LOVES her daddy - he makes her laugh more than anyone else!  He lifts her above his head (all 20+ pounds of her!!!) and she just squeals with delight.  She loves music and loves to be sung to.  And her favorite thing of all, to be outside!  I'm about 95% sure that she says "mama."  It only happens when she's upset and cries out "maaaaama," but it happens to frequently to really be a coincidence, haha.

Well, my break is over and I must get back to work.  Staying Posi and keeping the faith.  Let me know if you have job ideas!

A Few of My Favorite Things

I am a firm believer that if a company makes a product that works well, is priced right and makes my life easier, that it is my duty to tell all my friends. So, here is another one of THOSE blog entries. These are a few things that I have discovered over the past month or so that have helped me complete projects, save and renew items in my house and generally keep my sanity, which, for a new mother is absolutely priceless!

1. Bar Keepers FriendThis stuff is absolutely amazing. For Christmas, my sweet mother in law gave us a new set of stainless steel cookware. We love it, but are still getting used to having pots and pans without the non-stick coating. We have burned grilled cheese sandwiches several times, and we won't even go into the egg dilemma! We have a skillet that I seriously thought was beyond cleaning, and this stuff saved it! Wet the pan, pour it on and let it sit a bit and the icky grime will come right off. It also did WONDERS for my old, worn out kitchen sink. Almost looks like new :) I hear you can also use it on plates that have fork marks to make them look like new again, too.

2. Krylon Spray Wood Stain

I have recently started refinishing furniture. I am having so much fun hunting for bargains at garage sales and antique malls, sanding, painting, staining, etc to make vintage pieces look like new again. Sometimes even better than new :) If you have ever worked with stain before, you know how absolutely messy and disgusting it is. With this product, you can spray on, wipe off and in a matter of minutes your piece is stained and dry. I tried the grey color and it was beautiful. Will definitely use this product again.

3. Briwax
Also along the lines of furniture refinishing, my mother in law introduced me to Briwax. This stuff is phenomenal! I have used it in multiple senarios from renewing an old piece, to applying to a freshly sanded piece, to applying on top of paint and I can not rave enough about how amazing this stuff works. I recommend wearing rubber gloves and letting the piece dry completely before you try to pick it up (I have a ruined sun dress as a reminder of that), but those are the only down falls. I was able to stain a chair in a matter of minutes rather than having to stain, dry, laquer, dry, etc. And I am very pleased with the look of the finished product.

4. Alex Jr. Tug Fish Baby Toy
I know all of the other entries are home improvement related, but like I said in the beginning, things that save my sanity are things that I will recommend to all my friends. Isabel's Great Grandma Smithee sent this to her on Grammy's last trip to Dallas. She loves this thing! I have had a couple of tear free showers because of this wonderful toy and I am so thankful for it!

4. Fisher Price Luv U Zoo Ez Clean High Chair
After Isabel's last doctor's visit, it was recommended that we try Rice cereal with her. The first time, we tried feeding her in her Bumbo seat, which did not go over very well. So, I made the trek to Babies R Us to do high chair research. Oh how life changes when you are a mother :) I tried several brands to see what was the easiest to use one handed, what was easiest to clean and what took up the least amount of space. Basically, which high chair was the best value for the least price. I chose this high chair for many reasons. First of all, it's cute :) It is gender neutral, so one day if Isabel has a baby brother, he will be able to use it as well. The tray has a dishwasher safe tray that fits on top of it and it is easy to take off and put on with one hand. The straps are probably the number one biggest reason I bought this high chair. They are a rubber material which is so easy to clean, unlike all other high chairs fabric counterparts. The straps also come apart so that they go over Iz's shoulders, around her waist and up through her legs - easy to put on, take off and comfortable for Isabel. The high chair has several different positions and heights so that it grows with your baby. Isabel and Mommy are happy, and that means a LOT.

So, there you have it. My favorite purchases this month. Hope these items help you like they have me :)
